Sara Hiles

Sara Shipley Hiles has taught journalism part-time at Western Kentucky University since 2006. Originally from Marthasville, Mo., she graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans and worked as a staff writer for newspapers in New Orleans, Oregon, Louisville, Ky., and St. Louis before becoming a full-time freelance writer. She has won awards for feature, news and investigative writing. Her first book, about Hurricane Katrina and New Orleans, came out in 2007. (City Adrift, LSU Press).

Sara felt privileged to teach the inaugural Fleischaker-Greene Scholars class. “The students encountered a lot of challenges in their reporting and learned a lot about the power of the First Amendment,” she said.
