Sara Shipley Hiles is a freelance journalist and part-time faculty member at the Western Kentucky University School of Journalism.

She has worked as a reporter for The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, The Statesman-Journal in Salem, Ore., The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. She was co-author of a book, “City Adrift: New Orleans Before and After Hurricane Katrina,” in 2007.

Sara grew up amid the rolling hills and rich farmland near Marthasville, Mo., where her parents ran a hog farm for a while. She received a bachelor’s degree in communications at Loyola University in New Orleans and is finishing a master’s degree in journalism at the University of Missouri.
